Hermitage Amsterdam is a branch of the Hermitage in St. Petersburg located on the Amstel River in Amsterdam. It exists since February 2004 as a small museum in an annexe at the Nieuwe Herengracht, but between March 2007 and June 2009 expanded and now covers the entire building Amstelhof.
The entirely renovated museum was officially opened on June 19, 2009 by Queen Beatrix and Russian President Dmitry Medvedev on June 20 and opened to the public. From the beginning, the Hermitage was a popular destination. After just over a year, on August 15, 2010, the millionth visitor recorded, making it one of the top attractions of Amsterdam.
