Waterlooplein - Waterloo Square - Flea Market
Waterlooplein is the bustling centre of Amsterdam for more then a hundred years and plays host to one of the Netherlands most historic flea markets. The market, which runs from Monday to Saturday, is comprised of more than 300 stalls showcasing a wide range of goods. Trade in old books, new or second-hand clothes, bikes, bric-a-brak, furniture and trinkets, scarves, hats and t-shirts and cheesy souvenirs for less than in the souvenir shops...
Many visitors daily strolling through the narrow streets of the market, looking for old, unique and crazy retro clothing..., to see if there's something they like among the second hand and new goods. Unlike other markets and shops in Amsterdam, this is one of the few places where you can try bargaining. The square is also surrounded by several small cafes, so you can take a break from all the hustle and bustle of shopping.
Waterlooplein History
The current waterlooplein was once the Centre of the old Jewish quarter of Amsterdam. In the 17th century both Portuguese and German Jewish immigrants settled here. Since then the neighborhood knows a lively street trade, especially since Jews couldn't own a shop. In 1882 after some of the canals had been filled in, the street market was held on the new city square of Waterlooplein. Stallholders who came from elsewhere were at first furious about the compulsory move. They complained that too few buyers would come and the spot was too windy. But despite that the waterlooplein market became a popular market.
