The Flower market is a floating flower market offering a diverse range of flowers, cacti, house and garden plants, bulbs, seeds, plant pots, plant food, and gardening equipment. A wonderfully colourful place to wander around, and a great source of unusual and interesting plants. The market runs along the Singel between Koningsplein and Muntplein, the market is called a floating market because it stands on houseboats.
The flower market, flower and plant market is a permanent market in the city centre of Amsterdam. The market was located until 1862 at St. Luciënwal and in 1883 moved to its current location the Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal. At that time the market was called trees and plant market, fresh flowers were sold from the 60 's of the 20th century.
The market stalls are located on boats floating in the oldest canals of Amsterdam. This is a relic from the days when the flowers and plants sold at this market were shipped in from the horticultural areas around the city by barges. In the past few decades the flower market has become more and more a famous tourist attraction in Amsterdam.
The various types of flowers vary by season. The locals come here in the spring for tulips, in summer for roses and in december for Christmas trees. There's even a Christmas store that sells Christmas decorations and candles all year round. You can easilly spend an hour when you walking along the various stalls.
The market is always in bloom, during all seasons, and it’s the only floating flower market in the world. They also sell bulbs, so if you want to take a part of Amsterdam home with you to plant in your garden, they’re ready so you can have the souvenir that keeps on growing.
