Leidseplein Amsterdam - Leidse Square
The Leidseplein is a square in the Centre of Amsterdam, in the extension of the Leidsestraat. It borders the Marnixstraat and Kleine-Gartmanplantsoen.
The square dates back to the construction period of the Canal District (the fourth explanation). The Leidseplein is named after Leidsepoort (Leidse port), which stood here until 1862 and was the beginning of the road to Leiden.

The Leidseplein is a well known entertainment area with terraces, theatres and restaurants. The square, which along with the nearby Korte and Lange Leidsedwarstraat and the Leidsekruisstraat forms the Leidsebuurt, is a meeting place for both locals and tourists, there also many street artists, the square attracts thousands of tourists.
During the summer months, you can find plenty of entertainment on the Leidseplein. While you enjoy a drink in the Sun on one of the terraces you will be entertained by musicians, jugglers and mime artists.

The Leidseplein is one of the busiest centres for nightlife in the city. On and around the Leidseplein you will find many restaurants, bars, pubs, coffeeshops and cafés next to the various cinema's and theatres, such as the Stadsschouwburg (Municipal Theatre), DeLaMar theatre and Theater Bellevue. World famous music venues as Paradiso and Melkweg and many other clubs provide a lively nightlife on the square.
