The Sloten Windmill and Coopery Museum

The Sloten Windmill and Coopery Museum in Amsterdam

The Sloten Windmill and Coopery Museum are 2 locations worth seeing under 1 roof. An original Poldermill and a museum where you can see how barrels are being manufactured.

The Sloten Windmill is the name of a polder in the village of Sloten in Amsterdam. It's an oak thatched octagonal mill on a stone base. The mill is located on the circular canal of the Haarlemmermeer polder and together with the Akergemaal it takes care for the drainage of the western suburbs.

The Sloten Windmill is one of the few in Holland which is open (almost) every day to the public. The mill also has an elevator and is used as a wedding venue for the district of New West.

In the mill is much to see about the mill technique and history of Sloten and Oud Osdorp, but there is also a presentation "Rembrandt in the attic", which contains wax figures of Rembrandt and several of his characters. Since April 2005, the complex is extended with a Kuiperijmuseum.

Because the mill is open all year daily (almost) and is located near the Schiphol Airport, it is a popular getaway for many foreign tourists who want to bring a short visit to a working mill just near Amsterdam. The mill has a status of municipal monument.
