Canal House Museum - Het Grachtenhuis

Het Grachtenhuis museum in Amsterdam

The Canal House is a museum at the Herengracht in Amsterdam dedicated to the 17th-century Amsterdam canals.

Through an interactive and multimedia exhibition, the museum tells the history of the canal. The exhibition includes models, animations, 3D and wall projections and a doll house where the rooms are brought to life using the Pepper's ghost technique.

The museum website provides access to the Digital Canal House, an online database of the monumental buildings on the Amsterdam canals. The database includes 9600 objects, buildings and complexes and 5400 images.

The museum was opened in April 2011 to the public. The reason for this was the appointment in 2010 of the Amsterdam canals on the World Heritage List. The museum was closed for restoration and refurbishment, after a few months and re-opened at the end of March 2012.
